Our recent Career Center survey asked about whether you think layoffs and salary cuts are a thing of the past or if 2010 will bring more of the same.  The majority of respondents — 70% — are optimistic about salaries, saying they do not expect any further salary cuts in 2010. 

However, respondents were not so optimistic about the chances of future layoffs.  After a year in which over 75% of respondents saw layoffs at their firms, almost half — 45% — think there is at least a 50-50 chance of more layoffs in 2010.

Just under half of all respondents saw their salaries cut in 2009:

  • 40% of respondents reported that their firm cut salaries in 2009′
  • 60% of respondents reported that their firm did not cut salaries in 2009.

Although some have already seen salary cuts in 2010, most respondents are optimistic that the pay cuts are over:

  • 37% of respondents predicted that their firm will not cut salaries in 2010; 
  • 33% of respondents predicted that their firm will probably not cut salaries in 2010; 
  • 10% of respondents predicted that there is a 50-50 chance that their firm will cut salaries in 2010; 
  • 9% of respondents predicted that their firm will probably cut salaries in 2010;
  • 11% of respondents reported that their firm has already cut salaries in 2010.

Only the lucky minority avoided seeing layoffs at their firms in 2009:

  • 45% of respondents reported that their firm conducted open layoffs in 2009;
  • 32% of respondents reported that their firm conducted stealth layoffs in 2009;
  • 20% of respondents reported that their firm conducted no layoffs in 2009;
  • 3% of respondents did not know if their firm conducted layoffs in 2009.

And many are worried there may be still more layoffs in 2010:

  • 27% of respondents predicted that their firm probably will conduct layoffs in 2010;
  • 18% of respondents predicted that there is a 50-50 chance that their firm will conduct layoffs in 2010;
  • 8% of respondents reported that their firm has already conducted layoffs in 2010;
  • 27% of respondents predicted that their firm probably will not conduct layoffs in 2010;
  • 20% of respondents predicted that their firm won’t be conducting layoffs in 2010.
