Stat(s) Of The Week: Goodbye, Stranger

When attorneys go from outside counsel to in-house counsel, do they remember their old friends?

stat of the week imageWhile law firms may assume that alumni who move in-house will look favorably on their alma mater when it comes time to doling out work, they shouldn’t count on it.

Above the Law recently surveyed more than 500 in-house attorneys about their outside counsel, including which law firms they use and how they choose those firms.

In-house lawyers were asked to rank seven factors in terms of relative importance when choosing a law firm. Former affiliation with a firm had the lowest average ranking among attorneys surveyed. More than half (59%) identified it as the least important factor when choosing a firm.

Law firms shouldn’t shutter their alumni networking events just yet, though. Relationships with individual attorneys were ranked among the most important factors.
